What Is Depression?

Depression is more than just feeling sad occasionally, or feeling “down in the dumps” from time to time. That’s just part of the human condition. Instead, depression is a complex mood disorder in which a variety of symptoms last at least two consecutive weeks and can profoundly impact every aspect of your life.

The exact cause of depression is yet to be fully determined but we do know that multiple factors, including biological, psychological and environmental elements, are involved.

While depression can occur at any age, it typically emerges during young adulthood (late teens to mid 20s) and affects about two in 10 Americans at some point in their lifetime.

Common Symptoms of Depression

Depression manifests differently for everyone but typical signs include:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Significant changes in appetite or weight
  • Sleep disturbances (insomnia or oversleeping)
  • Fatigue or loss of energy
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
  • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

The Impact of Depression

Depression typically affects all parts of you – emotionally, physically and socially. It can make completing even simple daily tasks feel overwhelming.

  • Work or study may become increasingly difficult
  • Relationships may suffer as you withdraw from loved ones
  • Self-care routines such as exercise may fall by the wayside
  • Even getting out of bed can feel like a nearly impossible challenge

Types of Depression

Depression can take various forms, including:

  • Major Depressive Disorder
  • Dysthymia, also known as Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD)
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
  • Postpartum Depression

At DC Talk Therapy, we treat all of the above. One type of depression we do not treat is bipolar disorder. For that, we can refer you to other therapists we know in the Washington, DC area.

Hope for Recovery

While depression can feel overwhelming, it’s important to remember that it is highly treatable. With the right support and treatment, many people with depression go on to lead fulfilling, joyful lives. At DC Talk Therapy, we’re committed to helping you find your path to recovery.

At DC Talk Therapy, we employ a range of evidence-based treatment approaches tailored to your unique needs:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Lifting mood
  • Reshaping negative thought patterns
  • Developing healthier coping mechanisms

Your therapist will skillfully integrate CBT techniques into your sessions, equipping you with practical tools to manage difficult emotions and navigate life’s challenges.

Additional Therapeutic Modalities

We recognize that every individual’s path to healing is unique. That’s why we offer a diverse range of therapeutic approaches, including:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Learn to embrace your thoughts and feelings while committing to positive change.

  • Psychodynamic Therapy: Explore past experiences to gain insights into current emotional challenges.
  • Mindfulness Techniques: Develop present-moment awareness to reduce stress and enhance overall well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions About Depression

It depends on a few factors, including the severity and duration of your symptoms and whether a combination of psychotherapy and lifestyle changes have helped.

We work closely with several psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners in the Washington, D.C., area, so if there’s reason to think that a medication evaluation for an antidepressant may be helpful we will refer you to one of our trusted providers.

If you are prescribed medication, you and your therapist will continue to work together. A combination of medication and psychotherapy is often the best way to treat certain types of depression.

That depends on a variety of factors, including the severity and duration of your symptoms; regular attendance; and your willingness to make changes suggested to you by your therapist. For some, it’s as few as 10 sessions, and for others it’s much more.

Throughout the therapeutic process, you and your therapist will evaluate your progress together and determine whether or not to continue working together, and if so, at what frequency.

  1. Regular exercise: Physical activity can boost mood and reduce stress.
  2. Healthy diet: Proper nutrition supports overall mental health.
  3. Adequate sleep: Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule can help regulate mood.
  4. Mindfulness and meditation: These practices can reduce stress and improve emotional regulation.
  5. Sunlight exposure: Getting enough natural light and artificial light (light box) can help, especially for those with Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Yes, here is one.

  1. The “Three C’s” of depression resilience:
    • Control: Focus on what you can control in your life.
    • Commitment: Stay committed to your goals and values
    • Challenge: View difficulties as challenges to overcome rather than insurmountable obstacles.
