About Sophie Bauer

Sophie Bauer provides individual therapy for OCD, anxiety, stress related to life transitions and self-esteem issues.

She also helps clients with relationship problems.

Ms. Bauer has completed the International OCD Foundation’s Behavioral Therapy Training Institute program. She primarily utilizes a type of behavioral therapy called Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) with her OCD clients.

The exposure part of ERP refers to practicing confronting the thoughts, images and situations that heighten our anxiety. The response prevention component refers to making a choice not to do a compulsive behavior once the anxiety or obsessions have been triggered.

Ms. Bauer also uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help with OCD.

CBT is a heavily researched and popular form of psychotherapy that links our thoughts to our feelings and behaviors. If we’re able to challenge our distorted or irrational thoughts, and replace them with more rational ones, we may be able to change our resulting feelings and behaviors.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a type of mindful psychotherapy that helps you stay focused on the present moment and accept thoughts and feelings without judgment.

A native Washingtonian, Ms. Bauer has a master’s degree in clinical social work from Catholic University. She has a bachelors degree from Kenyon College (Ohio).

Prior to joining DC Talk Therapy, Ms. Bauer worked as a school counselor at a private girls school in Washington, D.C.
