Dr. Patricia Barros is an expert in couples counseling and marriage counseling. She incorporates elements of different couples counseling approaches, including EFT (emotionally focused therapy) and the Gottman Method, which emphasizes ways to better manage conflict.
Dr. Barros also provides premarital counseling using the PREPARE/ENRICH program, the #1 premarital assessment tool. She is one of only a handful of marriage and family therapists in Washington, D.C., who are also certified in PREPARE/ENRICH. It allows the couple, with the help of a trained facilitator, to talk about the relationship’s strengths and growth areas.
Dr. Barros also sees individuals with anxiety and depression and is particularly interested in life transitions. As a native of Brazil, Dr. Barros also enjoys working with persons of color and those with different cultural backgrounds.
Dr. Barros is fluent in Portuguese and can conduct individual therapy sessions and couples counseling sessions in English or Portuguese.

In addition to her work at DC Talk Therapy, Dr. Barros is also an Assistant Clinical Professor in Family Science and the Director of the Center for Healthy Families at the University of Maryland-College Park. She is also an AAMFT (American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy) Approved Supervisor.
Dr. Barros earned a master’s degree in Psychology, as well as a Master’s and a Doctoral degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, all from Kansas State University. She was a postdoctoral clinical fellow at George Washington University.
Dr. Barros sees clients on Fridays and every other Saturday. She provides teletherapy, or online therapy, on a variety of video platforms like VSee and Zoom.
